China eSIM Comparison
As of 2026-09-12: five ways to get online in China compared — Airalo Asialink, Holafly unlimited, mainland prepaid (passport real-name, +86 number), CMHK / CSL Greater Bay plans, and home-carrier roaming. Data-only eSIMs do not receive +86 verification codes, and no eSIM bypasses the Great Firewall. All 5 rows below are marked pending — pricing and throttling terms change with promotions, and speed tests are placeholders until measured on the ground.

| Provider | 价格档 | 流量 | 有效期 | 护照实名 | 实测网速 | 热点共享 | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo Asialink Airalo 亚洲通 eSIM · Activates on landing; easiest for short trips. Regional plan covers China + neighbors. | US$ 20–47 | 1–10 GB | 7–30 days | No (email signup) | not yet measured | Yes | pending |
| Holafly China Holafly 中国不限量 · Unlimited but speed-capped after a threshold; good for heavy maps/streaming users. | US$ 32–90 | Unlimited (throttled) | 5–90 days | No | not yet measured | Limited / plan-dependent | pending |
| Mainland carrier tourist SIM 内地运营商入境套餐(实体卡) · Cheapest per GB, needs airport counter or store visit; gives you a +86 number (useful for verifications). | ¥ 50–200 | 5–30 GB | 7–30 days | Yes (passport, real-name law) | not yet measured | Yes | pending |

DATA · DECISION POINTS
How to Choose (5 Decision Points)
-
Trip length
Under 3 days: home-carrier daily pass or small Airalo pack. 4–10 days: Airalo/Holafly wins clearly. Longer or repeat trips: mainland tourist SIM.
-
Do you need a +86 number?
Booking platforms, some restaurants and WeChat verification SMS work better with a mainland number. If yes → mainland tourist SIM. If no → eSIM is simpler.
-
Data volume
Maps + messaging: 1 GB/day is plenty. Video calls / hotspot for laptop: get unlimited (Holafly) or 10GB+ plans.
-
Real-name tolerance
Mainland SIMs require passport registration (law). eSIMs from international providers do not. Borderline privacy-sensitive travellers: international eSIM.
-
Hotspot needs
Sharing to a laptop or travel partner? Check the hotspot column — Holafly limits it, Airalo and mainland SIMs generally allow it.

Frequently Asked
What is the best eSIM for China in 2026?
For most short trips: Airalo Asialink (cheap, reliable activation). Heavy data users: Holafly unlimited. Trips where you need a local number for bookings: a mainland tourist SIM beats every eSIM. Speed tests pending — see the table.
Does Airalo work in China?
Yes — Asialink and China-specific plans ride domestic networks and activate on landing. No VPN needed for domestic apps; blocked Western services stay blocked regardless of SIM (network-level, not SIM-level).
Do I need a VPN in China?
Google, Instagram, WhatsApp and similar are blocked at network level — no SIM or eSIM bypasses that. This page states the fact; we do not recommend specific VPN tools. Domestic alternatives (Amap, WeChat) cover most traveller needs.
Can I receive WeChat/bank SMS verification with a travel eSIM?
With an international eSIM keeping your home number active (dual-SIM), SMS to your home number arrives fine for non-Chinese services. For +86 services you need a mainland number — eSIMs don't provide one; mainland tourist SIMs do.
eSIM or physical SIM for China?
eSIM: instant, no store visit, keep home number active. Physical mainland SIM: cheaper per GB, +86 number, needs passport registration at purchase. Many travellers do both: eSIM day one, mainland SIM once settled.
